Tempest Drift Node
Studio table prepared for a calligraphy session

Sessions · Kyoto Studio

Three sessions. One studio. The same ink and paper each time.

Whether you are here for a single afternoon or returning across several weeks, the materials are prepared and the table is waiting.

What is available

Three ways into the practice, each one complete on its own terms.

The sessions at Tempest Drift Node were designed to be entered at different points, depending on what a guest is looking for. A visitor to Kyoto who has an afternoon free will find something different here from someone who has been thinking about learning calligraphy for several years. Both are welcome, and neither is expected to become the other.

All three sessions include materials. All three are held in the same studio, with the same quality of attention. They differ in duration, focus, and how much ground they cover. What they have in common is that each one ends with a finished piece in the hands of the person who made it.

Practical matters

A few things worth knowing before you write to us.

Language

All sessions are conducted in English. Cultural context — the meaning of characters, stroke order, the aesthetic tradition behind the work — is explained naturally as the session unfolds.

Group size

Sessions are limited to four to six guests. This is not incidental. It is the size at which personal attention remains possible and the room retains its quiet.

What to bring

Nothing, beyond yourself. All materials are provided and prepared in advance. Comfortable clothing is sensible — ink can occasionally reach places it was not intended to.

Booking

Write to us through the contact form on the studio page. We will confirm availability and arrange the details from there. No deposit is required to enquire.

Location

31 Higashiōjicho, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto 606-8334. The studio is in a quiet part of Sakyo-ku, reachable on foot from several bus lines. We can send directions when you book.

Cancellation

We ask for notice where possible, so that we can offer the place to someone else. If plans change at short notice, a simple message is all that is needed.

Not sure where to begin

A rough guide, based on what guests often tell us they are looking for.

"I'm visiting Kyoto and have a free afternoon."

The First Brush Session is likely what you are looking for — a single hour, no commitment, a piece to take home. Many guests who started there have returned for more, but it is complete as it stands.

"I am more drawn to painting than to writing characters."

The Ink Painting Afternoon will suit you well. The focus is on tone, observation, and the particular quality of ink on paper rather than on script or stroke order. The two-hour format allows more room to work slowly.

"I want to actually learn this. Not just try it once."

The Practice Series is for you. Three sessions across a few weeks, each one building on the last, with a brush and ink set to take home so that the practice can continue between visits. The progress guests make across three sessions is always tangible.

"I'm not sure what I'm looking for. I just find this interesting."

Write to us. We are glad to hear from people who are curious without having made up their minds. A conversation about what draws you to the practice often helps clarify which session makes sense to start with.
