書道 · Kyoto Studio
Where the brush meets the page and the mind grows still.
Shodō and ink painting sessions in a quiet Kyoto studio. All materials provided. No prior experience needed.
Explore SessionsWhat we offer
A practice that asks only that you arrive and hold the brush.
Unhurried by nature
Each session moves at the pace of ink drying — slow enough to notice what your hand is doing, gentle enough to allow mistakes to become part of the work.
All materials provided
Brushes, ink stones, ink sticks, washi paper — everything is prepared and waiting. You bring only your attention and, if you wish, a quiet mind.
Open to first-time guests
No background in calligraphy or art is required. Our sessions are designed around the person holding the brush, not the marks already left on paper.
The practice
Ink, paper, and the particular quiet of a studio afternoon.
Posture and presence
Before the first stroke comes the way you sit. We take a moment to settle the body and feel the weight of the brush, finding a stillness that carries through the whole session.
Grinding the ink
The slow circular motion of grinding an ink stick against a stone is itself a kind of preparation. Something in the rhythm slows the thinking and opens the hand.
Character and composition
From a single brushstroke to a composed character, we work through the underlying logic of the mark — how weight, speed, and breath shape what appears on the page.
A piece to keep
Each guest leaves with a finished work — something made by their own hand in a single sitting. The imperfections are part of it. That is the nature of the medium.
How a session unfolds
Three simple steps from arrival to finished work.
Arrive and settle
You are shown to your place at the studio table. The materials are already prepared. There is no rush. A brief introduction covers posture, how to hold the brush, and the rhythm of grinding ink.
Work through the strokes
With quiet guidance, you move through foundational strokes and toward a complete character or composition. The session follows your pace rather than a fixed sequence.
Leave with your work
Before you go, your finished piece is set aside to dry and carefully wrapped to carry home. A short reflection on the session closes the time together.
The studio
A small studio in Sakyo-ku, Kyoto, with a considered approach to traditional practice.
20+
years the studio has offered shodō instruction, refining the approach with each season and each new guest
4–6
maximum number of guests per session, so guidance stays personal and the space remains unhurried
All levels
from those who have never touched a brush to those returning to a practice they set aside years ago
